Buckingham Palace announced that Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth II of England, will retire from official life at 95 years of age.

The news was confirmed this morning in a brief statement: “His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh has decided that he will no longer participate in public engagements since the fall of this year. In making this decision, the duke has the full support of the queen. Prince Felipe will attend previously scheduled commitments between now and August, both individually and accompanying the queen."

The queen, who these days celebrated her 91st birthday, "will continue to carry out a complete program of official commitments," the statement said.

The prince has worked tirelessly for 70 years alongside the British monarch. The couple married at the famous Westminster Abbey in London on November 20, 1947, late in the Second World War.

Upon hearing the news of his retirement, the prince made a public appearance alongside his wife aboard their vehicle from Buckingham Palace to the royal chapel of St. James's Palace to participate in an Order of Merit service that it is given to prominent figures in literature and the arts.

According to reports from People magazine, some present expressed their congratulations to the English nobleman. "I'm sorry he's leaving [his duties]," someone was heard saying. "Well, I can't stand on my feet much longer," the prince was heard answering in return.
