What it was that led a Utah couple to martyre the three children they had taken into their home is the question asked by the authorities after their arrest last week, accused of locking the minors in the dark, in diapers, with the hands tied and the mouth covered with electrical tape.

Matthew Earl Waldmiller, 40, and Diane Seifert Waldmiller, 41, are accused of martyring that the 7, 10, and 11-year-old children lived in the town of Roy.

Following the arrest, the Waldmillers confessed that they locked the children there and frequently held their wrists and closed their mouths with duct tape.

According to People, the couple locked the minors in an unfurnished room, with only two individual mattresses on the floor. The walls were painted black and the room gave off an odor of feces, urine, and mold.

The couple's arrest was made thanks to an investigation by the Utah Children's Services division, which began investigating on March 17 after receiving an anonymous complaint about the treatment of minors. The two now face charges of criminal abuse of a minor for intentionally causing physical harm.

The children, who suffer from malnutrition and injuries due to ties, told authorities that the couple forced them to exercise to earn their food, which they were served bathed in salt and covered with cayenne pepper. Their adoptive parents also stripped them of clothing and left two of them in diapers when they began to cry.

People noted that it is unclear how long the children had been with this foster family, who was caring for another 2-year-old girl, who had no signs of abuse.
