Dakota Thornton, the 16-year-old boy who shot his older brother last year because he was in love with his girlfriend, pleaded guilty to third-degree murder on Wednesday in a Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, court.

As reported by the Fox subsidiary in that state, in the early hours of March 30, 2016, Dominick Thornton, 18, and his brother faced a dispute over a young girl. The altercation ended with the oldest of the brothers lying on the floor after being shot. When the police arrived on the scene, the youngest found them with raised hands and admitted the crime saying: "I shot my brother."

In subsequent interrogations, the boy, who was 15 at the time, explained that he was in love with his brother's girlfriend - and that is why he killed him with a shotgun.

The Daily News reported that Dakota Thornton - who will be tried as an adult - could serve between 7 and a half to 45 years in prison. The sentence will not be announced until June and in the meantime the prosecution will estimate whether it reaches an agreement with the young man's lawyers after considering her criminal history. This began in 2012 and includes charges of aggravated assault, simple assault, terrorist threats, and bringing a weapon to school.

A judge said his mental health problems should also be considered, since the teenager was abused when he was in a foster home, and the fact that he had not been given his medications on the day of the crime.
