Denise Marie Coronado, a 19-year-old from Texas, is accused of turning a 14-year-old teenager into the sex slave of men who paid for her services.
If found guilty, she could be sentenced to life in prison. A Harris County judge this week decided to increase prostitution.
Prosecutors accuse Coronado of taking several men to have sex with the girl, while others collected the money. However, so far only she has been charged.
The young woman, whose identity has not been revealed, stated that she managed to escape thanks to being able to get a cell phone with which she accessed Facebook and was able to communicate with her family, who immediately alerted the authorities to locate her.
Coronado's defense attorney questioned whether the young woman was actually being held against her will by asking how it was possible that she had access to a phone and Facebook. He also directed attention to the individual who kidnapped the 14-year-old, saying that he, too, was able to compel the accused, who is also a teenager, to be his accomplice.
At the moment, Coronado, who had previously been to that same court on charges of possession of marijuana and assaulting a relative, has pleaded not guilty. His alleged victim is already back with his family and receiving the help of specialists in trafficking in white and sexual abuse.
