Former US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama captivated the heart of the United States for eight years. But before raising a family with his current wife, Obama proposed to another woman.

In a new book, Rising Star: The Making of Barack Obama, Obama's ex-girlfriend, Sheila Miyoshi Jager, tells author David Garrow: “In the winter of 1986, when we visited my parents, he asked me to marry him."

The ex-partner was introduced by mutual friends who wanted to tie them. Obama and his ex lived together for four years before Obama asked her in 1986, when he was 25 years old. Jager, who is currently a university professor, was 23 at the time and her parents thought she was too young to get married. So she said, "Not yet," according to a review of the book by The Washington Post.

Despite receiving a "no," Obama stayed with Jager, who confessed to the author that Obama's political aspirations soon caused a strain on the relationship.

Jager, who is of Dutch and Japanese roots, revealed that for Obama and his aspirations to become president one day, having a girlfriend who was not African American would affect him. According to her, Obama felt "caught between the woman he loved and the fate he knew was his."

Regarding their relationship, Jager points out that she was one in "they depended a lot on each other" and that Obama "compartmentalized his work and his life at home." Their goals, she adds, became more apparent - and more problematic for their relationship - in 1987.

"Became… Very ambitious very suddenly,”he said to Garrow. "I remember very clearly when this transformation happened, and I remember very specifically that by 1987, more or less when we had been in the relationship for a year, he already had his vision of becoming president."

According to the book, Jager also reveals that when Obama was preparing to start studying at Harvard, he proposed to her a second time, but when he was in his first year of college, he fell in love with Michelle Robinson, with whom he now has two daughters: Malia. and Sasha. Since then they have been inseparable.
