The beloved hippo Gustavito of the National Zoo of El Salvador passed away after being the victim of a cruel attack that occurred during the past week.
According to a press conference offered by Vladan Henriquez, director of the zoo, the animal was ruthlessly attacked with metal bars, rocks and knives on the night of Tuesday, February 21, leaving its body full of wounds and lacerations, including the inside of his mouth.
A CNN report adds that the wounds of the popular 15-year-old hippo were only discovered by local employees until Thursday, after noticing that he was not eating and did not come out of his pond. Despite all the medical attention given, the animal died last Saturday.
“We are used to seeing people dead every day, they kill us like flies. But they killed an animal that only entertained us,” Martin Castillo, a salesman who works outside the zoo and who referred to the high murder rate that plagues the country, told the Associated Press.
Through social networks, tributes have been delivered to Gustavito, who came to El Salvador when he was just 2 years old, from Guatemala.
