The family of the 8-year-old De'Maree Atkins' family lives a nightmare, after a subject shoots the car of her mother, Latoyia Thomas, just moments after another car collided with them.

The horrible episode took place in the early hours of Saturday and according to a report by the Houston City Police Department, the girl was sleeping in the back seat of the vehicle, a Honda Accord, when they were hit by a white Pontiac that was traveling to high speed.

Apparently another car, also circulating on the allowed limit, was accompanying the culprit of the accident. After the crash, the two cars fled.

Suddenly, a third vehicle stopped just behind Thomas's car. "After the crash, an unidentified person opened fire on the Honda, injuring De'Maree," reads the police report.

Following the attack, the suspects fled the scene, leaving the girl in critical condition. "Paramedics took the girl to the hospital, where she died from her injuries," added the report.

"I was saying 'stay with me, stay with me,'" the inconsolable mother told the Houston Chronicle in an interview about the moment she noticed her daughter's injuries.

The motives for the crime are still unknown and the authorities in charge of the investigation do not currently have any suspect in custody. A $ 5,000 reward has been offered to any citizen who can provide information leading to the capture of those responsible.

Similarly, the girl's family has launched a campaign on the GoFundMe website to raise funds and help with funeral expenses.
