President Donald Trump nominated Alexander Acosta as his new candidate for Secretary of Labor on Thursday, making the 48-year-old Cuban-American lawyer the first Hispanic to aspire to a position in the cabinet of the new administration.

Acosta, who was the Miami federal attorney and worked in the civil rights division in the presidency of George W. Bush, was until now the dean of the faculty of law at the Florida International University (FIU). English).

Trump announced his selection at a press conference at the White House, a day after his first candidate for Secretary of Labor, businessman Andrew Puzder, withdrew before mounting opposition in the Senate to his confirmation.

"He is going to be a great secretary of Labor," said Trump, who stressed that his candidate had already gone through the confirmation process three times in past administrations.

If confirmed, Acosta would become the first member of Trump's cabinet of Hispanic origin. Only Puzder's resignation prevented this from being the first government in decades without a Hispanic.

The son of Cuban immigrants, Acosta grew up in South Florida and graduated from Harvard University with a law degree. In addition to holding the position of federal prosecutor and working in the Justice department, he also held a position on the National Labor Relations Board.
