Brazil is in shock from another plane crash. This time it was the private plane on which one of the Supreme Court justices, Teori Zavascki, was traveling, who was in charge of some of the country's most important corruption cases and who had shaken politicians of all colors.

The small aircraft in which he was traveling along with five other passengers crashed a few kilometers before reaching the runway of the Paraty airport, near Rio de Janeiro, an hour after leaving Sao Paulo.

The magistrate was leading the investigation of the Petrobras scandal, in which there are almost 50 politicians involved in a plot linked to the Brazilian public oil company.

Yesterday, the small aircraft in which he was traveling along with five other passengers, crashed a few kilometers before reaching the runway of the Paraty airport, near Rio de Janeiro, an hour after leaving Sao Paulo.

It was the judge's own son, Francisco Prehn Zavascki, who confirmed the news through his Facebook page. Dear friends, we have just received confirmation that my father passed away. Thank you all so much for the strength!

While authorities investigate the cause of the incident, many Brazilians have begun to question whether it was an accident and echoed the complaint by the magistrate's son a few months ago that his family had received death threats.

Sergio Moro, a judge of first instance who is considered by many to be one of the greatest promoters of the fight against corruption in Brazil, said he was "perplexed" by the news and described Zavascki as "a Brazilian hero."

President Michel Temer decreed three days of mourning: "A modest tribute to those who served the legal class, the courts and the Brazilian people so much," he said after the news was released.

The death of the magistrate could delay Petrobras' case in the Supreme Court for several months, since the internal regulations of the Court stipulate that the work must be inherited by the substitute for the deceased.

The fact is that the new magistrate will be chosen by President Temer, who is also being investigated for alleged corruption.
