Mexican authorities are continuing to investigate the reason for the shooting that caused panic on Monday in the popular tourist destination of Playa del Carmen, Mexico, and left 5 people dead and more than 15 injured.

The Blue Parrot club, where the incident occurred, was crammed with tourists from various parts of the world when an armed subject attempted to enter with a weapon.

Two members of the security team tried to stop him, which cost them their lives. Sources in the Mexican press have identified the victims as Canadian Kirk Wilson, who was the security supervisor, and Italian Daniel Pessina.

Among the other victims are also the Mexicans Geovanni Francisco Ruiz and Rafael Antonio Peñaloza, who was wounded and died in hospital.

But perhaps the most shocking information is the confirmation that Alejandra Villanueva, the 18-year-old teenager from Colorado and the only female victim in the tragedy, died buried by the stampede that caused the shooting at the nightclub.

At a press conference, the Quintana Roo prosecutor, Miguel Ángel Pech, reported the news and identified the victim as " Alejandra Margarita Villanueva, originally from the United States."

Fifteen of the people who were injured were transferred to a local hospital, eight of them were released on the same Monday and so far only one of them remained hospitalized.

According to The Miami Herald newspaper, the incident was the result of an argument between two clients that escalated and that it was a "personal conflict".

In this sense, the Mexican prosecutor's office ruled out that the act was an act of terrorism.

Amid the grief over what happened, residents of Playa del Carmen staged a demonstration at the gates of the Blue Parrot against violence.
