Eleven people, including tourists and 3 children aged 2 to 12, died when a rudimentary suspension bridge collapsed in a wooded area of the Colombian city of Villavicencio, 150 kilometers east of Bogotá.

The accident, in which 14 people were also injured, occurred when the ropes of the pedestrian bridge broke and caused the fall from about 10 to 15 meters to the bottom of a pipe.

The bridge was built by the residents of the area to be able to cross the ravine, but over time it became one of the tourist attractions in the area.

Excessive use could have been the cause of the accident. Speaking to the Colombian newspaper El Tiempo, the president of the Community Action Board of the El Carmen, Miguel Caro said that the number of tourists who crossed occasionally rose to 13,000.

According to Caro, on several occasions he warned about the poor condition of the artisan bridge and regretted that the necessary maintenance was never carried out.
