An African immigrant trying to get to Spain traveled hidden in a suitcase. The young man was tucked inside the luggage of a 22-year-old Moroccan woman, who tried to enter it illegally in the Spanish city of Ceuta, in North Africa. The young man was found on December 30 and required immediate medical assistance.
Spanish authorities arrested two Moroccans who tried to illegally enter three Africans into Spain. The second case, which was discovered on January 2, was a man and a woman from Guinea, West Africa, who were hidden in the car of another Moroccan. One of them was hidden in the front panel of the car and the other in the back seat.
These cases are in addition to that of many sub-Saharan Africans living illegally in Morocco and trying to cross into Europe. These car smuggling incidents coincided with the massive attempt by a group of South African Saharan Africans who tried to jump over a six-foot-high border fence between Ceuta and Morocco.
A total of 1,100 immigrants attempted to cross that border on Sunday. Although none attempted to pass, the incident had violent consequences. 50 Moroccans and five Spanish border guards are reported to have been injured.
These desperate attempts to reach Europe in search of a better future, fleeing poverty and violence in his country, have claimed the lives of countless Africans.
