Eman Ahmed Abd El Aty, 36, has lived confined to his room in his native Egypt for most of his life.
Victim of a thyroid problem that has caused her to be overly obese since childhood, the woman now has a ray of hope thanks to a doctor in the Indian city of Mumbai who plans to undergo surgery to save her life.
"Eman did not live the life of a normal person," Shaimaa Ahmed, the woman's sister, told CNN. "She has been fighting this disease for 36 years."
The girl has suffered a real ordeal with her health problems, since since she was in fifth grade she dropped out of school because her thyroid problems caused her deep lethargy.
"She always wanted to lose weight and get better," said Eman's sister, who until a few years ago weighed 660 pounds.
A sudden rise in cholesterol made him lose consciousness. Before long, his doctors determined that it had been a slight heart attack. Thereafter, his health deteriorated severely and his weight skyrocketed to 1,000 pounds.
It was thanks to social networks that the family of the troubled girl found help. Multiple messages posted by her sister reached Dr. Dr Muffazal Lakdawala, a bariatric disease specialist from Mumbai.
If the surgery is successful, the patient will have to stay in India for a couple of months to stabilize and adapt to her new reality. According to the doctor, it will take two more operations for her to truly improve her deteriorating health.
If he achieves an optimal weight, Eman could return to a normal lifestyle, allowing him to start the life he left so many years ago when he was confined to living within the walls of his home.
