Former New York Jets player Joe McKnight was killed Thursday when a driver he was arguing with shot him on the street in New Orleans, Louisiana.

According to NOLA.com, a witness who did not want to be identified stated that he saw two men arguing. McKnight was "trying to apologize" when the other individual started shooting at him while warning him "I told you not to treat me jo..", an incident reminiscent of the one that cost NFL player Will Smith his life.

The author of the shooting was identified as Ronald Gasser, 54, who after spending the night in jail was released this Friday without charge, according to People. Authorities said the investigation was still ongoing and they continue to search for witnesses to the confrontation in Terrytown, an area about fifteen minutes from downtown New Orleans.

Agents who immediately went to the crime scene tried to resuscitate the former football player, but their efforts were unsuccessful. Gasser, for his part, remained at the scene of the crime and surrendered his weapon without putting up any resistance.

McKnight played at the University of Southern California before being selected in the 2010 draft by the NFL New York Jets. There he remained after seasons until the team decided to give him the letter of freedom in 2013. The following year he signed with the Kansas City Chiefs, with whom he failed to succeed due to injuries. In fact, he played only two games because of a ruptured Achilles tendon.

In search of opportunities he moved to the Canadian league, where he was part of the Edmonton Eskimos and this year of the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
