The presenter Steve Harvey caused quite a stir in 2015 during his presentation of the Miss Universe pageant, when he was wrong to announce the winner, saying that she was Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutiérrez when she was actually Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach. After publicly apologizing for the error, Harvey and Gutiérrez made peace.
However, four years after the coronation error went viral, Harvey was criticized for seemingly again confusing two candidates at the last gala, where Miss South Africa Zozibini Tunzi was crowned as Miss Universe 2019.
At the time of announcing the winner of the 'Best Typical Costume', Harvey said before the cameras: "Now let's see the winner, Philippines", while seeing on the screen a photo of Miss Philippines Gazini Ganados with her traditional outfit. However next to the presenter was not Granados but Miss Malaysia, Shweta Sekhon, who grabbed the microphone to Harvey and said to everyone: "It is not the Philippines, it is Malaysia."
"Okay, let me explain something to you," said the presenter in the face of the awkward situation in front of millions of viewers. "They have to stop doing this to me," he added, referring to the producers of the live show. "I can read. They are trying to fix it now. See, this is what they did to me in 2015, they made a bad move on me. This is Malaysia. I love this typical Malaysian outfit. This is crazy".
In fact, Harvey did announce the correct winner of the 'Best Typical Costume'. "Miss Universe Philippines Gazini Ganados is the winner of the Miss Universe 2019 best typical costume competition," the Miss Universe organization told PEOPLE via a statement. “As part of the live broadcast, we also featured the Miss Universe Malaysia national costume Shweta Sekhon. He did not make any mistakes about who was the winner of the 'Best Typical Costume' nor were there any mistakes in the teleprompter or by the production.”
In saying goodbye to Miss Malaysia on the air, Harvey used his sense of humor to ease the tension, joking: "I'm afraid to repeat your name because I don't know what the heck that teleprompter is doing."
