Animal skins are not in fashion and firms know it. Only in the last year have companies like Gucci or Michael Kors and online commerce giants like Net à Porter decided to stop selling fur permanently. Today Versace has announced that it is also joining this cause and will no longer manufacture designs made from this material.
The artistic director and president of the Italian house, Donatella Versace, declared this Wednesday to the financial magazine The Economist 1843 that she no longer wanted to "kill animals to make fashion".
Skins? I do not want. It doesn't seem right to me,”she admitted.
“[This means] a great step forward in the campaign for compassionate fashion. I am looking forward to seeing a skinless Versace,”wrote the president of the PETA animal rights organization, Dan Mathews, in a statement published by the Business of Fashion portal.
Although more and more companies join this movement in which the designer Stella McCartney pioneered, not everyone has received the news with joy.
“I am sorry that Versace has said that they will no longer use real fur in their collections. Most of the top designers will continue to work with leather, since they know that it is a natural product that is produced responsibly,” Mark Oaten, executive director of the international leather federation, told the WWD portal.
Just a day before Donatella Versace made these statements, the brand of shoes, bags and accessories Furla also announced the new anti-skin policy: from its next 2019 cruise collection, all its lines, male and female, will be completely skin-free.
