With back-to-school time around the corner, it's time to shop for the new school year. With so many options and new trends to choose from, we spoke with presenter Jorge Bernal and his wife, Panamanian stylist Karla Birbragher, about children's fashion during the event to celebrate the launch of the new Cat & Jack collection for sale at Target.
How was the association with Cat & Jack born?
Karla: We are from the Target family and Cat & Jack is a line that is coolest about this is that the children are involved in the designs of these clothes. To me particularly, because I have children, that interested me a lot and when I saw the clothing line it seemed super very modern and the fact that the children are involved in what is the design seems incredible to me. As a child I wish I had had that opportunity to do something like that.
Jorge: There are a lot of children's clothes and since children's clothes don't last long because they [grow] very fast, sometimes they make it of poor quality and you wash it once and that's it. This clothing is of high quality but is affordable.
You have two children, Lucas, 6, and Kylie, 2. What is the most important thing to keep in mind when shopping for children's clothing?
K: I think comfort is the most important thing.
J: And make them look good. There are a lot of clothes that they make and that do not fit children, they make it too big or too small. It is also very important that they like it. Nowadays if you buy something from Lucas and he doesn't like it, he won't wear it, then they have to like the clothes. Lucas puts on different colored leggings, he does not put on white leggings, we have to force him to put on white leggings because he likes to look fashionable with socks.
Q: What do you think about dressing children like parents?
K: Many times I see them the same or at least with the same wave. I buy them sneakers that are the same. It is much easier to find the same clothes for father and son than for mother and daughter, so what I do with Kylie is to combine our colors.
J: I am a fan of sneakers and every time I buy some I look to see if they have the size of Lucas to buy them.
What activities do you like to do with your children on a family day?
J: Pool when the day is good. When the day is bad we buy a huge bouncy house that fits right in the living room of the house and I inflate it there and the children jump, well, everyone! And there is a program called Just Dance that we put on Apple TV. Children start dancing like you have no idea.
Have there been any special moments recently with your children that you want to share?
K: Well I think that right now Kylie is older, kisses and hugs and talks a little, just after we went to a hotel pool I think it was super fun because as we were outside the house they two like they got together to play. Normally they do not do it at home because one is in one space and the other in another but when we were on vacation in this place it was a super nice time and together we feel that we share more.
