When Jamie Brewer walked the runway at New York Fashion Week, she did more than just wear Carrie Hammer couture. She also became the first person with Down syndrome to model at the prestigious event.
"Young ladies and women [see me] and say, 'If she can do it, so can I,'" Brewer said Thursday on the Today (NBC) show. "It is an honor to be a role model for young women and I want to encourage them to be themselves."
Brewer paraded this afternoon as part of the Role Models Not Runway Models campaign that Hammer created in 2014 when he began showing off his line at New York Fashion Week.
As well as a model, the also actress in the American Horror Story (FX) series is an advocate for people with intellectual disabilities. At age 19, she became a board member of the disability advocacy organization The Arc and is a member of the National Down Syndrome Congress.
