With the Christmas season comes the purchase of gifts, toys for children and household items, among others. With the recent events of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, thousands of consumers did not leave the purchase of their televisions until later.
But with the hysteria of preparing the house to receive guests, there are essentials that consumers may have forgotten to add to the shopping list. One of them could be a device to fix or secure the television or furniture against the wall that prevents them from falling and helps prevent accidents for the little ones.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has created the “Anchor it! (Hold it!) Secure your furniture and TVs: Protect Your Children”to promote safety and prevent unexpected and catastrophic accidents. The initiative was created after the IKEA company announced the withdrawal of commodes and dressers from the market.
This is even more important for families with young children, ages 2 to 5, as around 60 percent of child deaths from falling from a television or furniture onto them involve this group. At this age, children are in a developmental stage where they like to climb, jump, and want to exercise their independence by choosing their own clothes or outfits, or putting on their favorite television shows, according to CPSC data from 2011 to 2013..
Fixing them securely is easy, inexpensive and takes only 5 minutes. Find the instructions here and follow the next steps:
1. Using the supplied parts, secure one end of the interlock to your furniture or TV.
2. Following the instructions, secure the other end of the device to the wall or a strong base using the supplied parts.
3. Adjust as necessary and make sure the joint is tight.
