The Latinx Stars Performing At Coachella

Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival announced its lineup, and we're thrilled that some of our favorites stars will perform!

Even if you're not heading to Southern California desert town of Indio this April (hopefully because you've been there, done that), it's always exciting when a band you love is selected for this gig! Perhaps the most popular and star-studded annual music event in the US - spawning Young Hollywood's infamous hippie couture - Coachella started in 1999 and today attracts more than 126,000 attendees.

The Latinx representation this year is strong, with Bad Bunny and J Balvin on the list. With more Latin-American artists making international moves than, well, ever before, it's about time festivals started to include those such as Mon Laferte, Javiera Mena and Los Tucanes de Tijuana, even if they sing in Spanish.

The event will be taking place over six days from April 12 to 21 at in Indio, California. Below are the Latinx artist performing at Coachella.

J Balvin

The “Reggaeton” singer isn't new to this desert fest, as I've performed alongside Beyoncé for the “Mi Gente” remix last year. The Colombian native is one of the few international artists at the forefront of the current Latinx wave. The 33-year-old replaced Drake as the most streamed artist worldwide, with 3 billion streams and 131 million fans on Spotify, wrapping up 2018 tight.

Eight Eyes

Coachella area natives Ocho Ojos are a Latin Fusion band that incorporates hip-hop, cumbia and electronic music. The duo, made up of Cesar Flores and Danny Lloyd Torres, bring a unique sound to the Valley as they incorporate influences and rhythms from all over Latin America. Lately they've focused on Chica, the psychedelic cumbia originating in Peru.

Mon Laferte

Chilean singer Norma Monserrat Bustamante Laferte, also known by her stage name Mon Laferte, had one of the hottest albums in 2018. Her project Norma scored her a Latin Grammy for Best Alternative Song for her track “Amàrrame” in 2017. Her rockabilly style is quite eclectic and experimental - the 35-year-old draws inspiration from cha-cha-cha, mambo, bachata, bolero and pop. She also leads all Chilean artists in sales in the digital era, selling over half a million records in Latin America and about 800,000 digital copies between albums and singles.

Bad bunny

The 24-year-old Latin trap star Bad Bunny put a cherry on top of 2018 - and our best Christmas Eve - with his debut album X 100PRE. Not only did he have an explosive year of collaborations in 2018, but the Puerto Rico native has also had two Top 5 hits on Billboard 's Hot 100, and his latest album earned the No. 1 spot on Billboard' s Hot 100 for Top Latin Albums this week.

Tomasa Del Real

With the stage name Tomasa Del Real, Valeria Cisternas has literally made a name for herself as the queen of reggaetón's digital underground. The 32-year-old of Chilean descent adopted her moniker as a way to address the stereotype of women of color who carry fruit on their head, and because she feels she's always been judged because of her skin color. Tomasa is reclaiming the perreo scene - the sexual back-to-front dancing that has been looked down upon since reggaetón's early years - as neoperreo.

Rosalia

Although the singer is not Latinx - she's from Catalonia, Spain - Rosalia is best known for her hip-hop and flamenco fusion. In 2018 she released her album El mal querer, a project inspired by the 14th-century novel Flamenca. Her music has a huge Latinx following, and she snatched two Latin Grammy's in 2018 for Best Alternative Song and Urban Fusion Performance. The album peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for Top Latin Albums.

Toucans Of Tijuana

Get your Tucanazo moves ready because these 12-time Grammy nominated Tijuana natives are set to play. In 2016 the cultural icons became the first Regional Mexican band to participate in the opening video for the Super Bowl - not to mention the first Regional Mexican Norteño band to win an international film award. Since starting in 1987, they have had 34 Gold-certified records and 30 Platinum-certified records.

Javiera Mena

The popularity of this indie electro-pop singer of Chilean descent has grown over the 10 years since her debut album Esquemas Juveniles. She continues to bless us with eclectic sounds that have evolved with her more acoustic style. The 35-year-old's latest album, Espejo, has earned her the recognition as one of the most important Latin-American pop artists of this generation.
