Based on Jay Asher's young adult novel about the suicide of a high school girl and its consequences, Netflix's 13 Reasons Why debuts today.

Selena Gomez, who had checked into rehab last year for anxiety and depression, used her experience as the executive producer on the Netflix show.

“I was going through a really difficult time when they started production. I went away for 90 days and talked with a lot of kids. It definitely hit home, a very important part of me,”she said in a panel promoting the series. “Kids have to see something that's frightening, I want them to understand I definitely relate to everything. I was a mess.”

The storyline revolves around a high-school student named Clay, who tries to make sense of his crush Hannah Baker's decision to take her life. Hannah left behind 13 cassettes with the thirteen reasons why she committed suicide, each cassette pertaining to someone in her life.

Gomez hopes that the show will help teens going through difficult times, especially those who deal with the pressures of social media. The “Kill em with Kindess” singer recently spoke about the effect that Instagram had on her self esteem. “I was an addict, and it felt like I was seeing things I didn't want to see, like it was putting things in my head that I didn't want to care about. I always end up feeling like s *** when I look at Instagram,”she said in her recent cover story for Vogue.
