Selena Quintanilla's life and music continue to inspire fans almost 24 years after her death. Jennifer Lopez famously portrayed the beloved “Queen of Tex-Mex” in the 1997 movie Selena, two years after her tragic murder in a motel in her hometown of Corpus Christi, Texas, by former fan Yolanda Saldívar, who worked as a manager in the singer's clothing boutiques.
Now Selena's story is coming to the small screen in two upcoming series. In 2018, Netflix announced plans for Selena: The Series, which will be developed and executive-produced by the Quintanilla family. According to the official show description, the series will follow the singer as she “must make tough choices to hold on to family, true love and music.”
No release date or cast information is available yet.
Telemundo also announced the series El Secreto de Selena, based on the book by Puerto Rican TV host and Emmy winner María Celeste Arrarás, who covered the murder and trial and got an exclusive interview with Selena's murderer, Saldívar.
“She became this phenomenon because she was talented and when this happens to her, she was almost at the top of her success,” Arrarás told People en Español. After so many years of hard work, Selena's life was taken from her. There are so many factors that make people fall in love with her.”
In the Telemundo series, actress Maya Zapata plays the “Como la Flor” and “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” singer, Damayanti Quintanar plays her murderer Yolanda Saldivar - who is serving life in prison - Daniel Elbittar plays Selena's widower Chris Perez and Sofía Lama plays journalist María Celeste Arrarás.
The Grammy winner, who died at 23 at the height of her fame, posthumously received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame last year, and her family and fans still keep her legacy alive. “Miss that laugh, that smile, her genuine way of just being,” her sister Suzette Quintanilla wrote in Instagram in 2018. She is just one of millions who miss the uniquely charming and talented Mexican-American star.
