The wife of a patient who was dying of complications from the coronavirus decided to refrain from visiting her husband to save the facemasks that were scarce in the New Orleans hospital where he was admitted.
This was revealed to People Blaire Guidry, an intensive care nurse at Ochsner Medical Center, who said that the selfless act of stopping goodbye to her husband in his last moments of life surprised her and filled her with emotion.
"It could have come, if it's the end of [the patient's] life and we're turning off the machines, the spouse and immediate children are allowed, but [she] knew she would have to wear a mask if she came, and she didn't want to, knowing how much we need that equipment, "he said. "It was so disinterested that it made me cry."
The man, whose identity cannot be revealed by hospital policies, was interned in the aforementioned medical center where he died at the age of 70. His wife was always on the lookout for his progress by calling the hospital "every day," the magazine reported.
In addition, Guidry explained that the entire intensive unit is full of sick patients with the new virus and that protective equipment for medical personnel is scarce.
Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards reported on the first COVID-19 case on March 9. Thereafter, cases continued to increase considerably.
The state records 9,150 positive cases, 310 deaths and 1,639 hospitalized, according to figures from the state Department of Health.
