A Canadian airline who went on vacation to Mexico reported being the victim of a brutal beating at a resort. Lexie York, 29, said she was attacked in her hotel room on November 10. That was her first night staying at the Grand Bahía Príncipe resort in Tulum, Canadian media CBC reported.

The woman, who lives in Ottawa, was spending the day at the hotel restaurant with some strangers she met there, a group with two couples, the Mexico News Daily reported. That night the young woman went to her room and soon after she heard a knock on the door. When she opened she saw that it was one of the men from the group she had met, who forcibly entered her room, according to CBC.

"Then he started strangling me," York said. "I ended up on the bed, he was pushing me on the bed, squeezing my neck." According to her, the man hit her on the head and face until she was unconscious. CBC reports that when she woke up she was on the floor next to the bed and had lost vision in both eyes. The young woman was able to seek help and was taken to a hotel in Playa del Carmen. She then had to undergo surgeries to rebuild her face at a hospital in Cancun.

Her brother told the Canadian media that Lexie had to undergo "nine hours of plastic surgery." The young woman was optimistic that she could return to her home in Canada and overcome the trauma of this assault. The alleged attacker, identified as Ricardo SP, 34, a Mexican driver, was arrested in connection with the crime, the Mexico News Daily reported. The Bahia Principe hotel chain sent a statement after the attack, expressing its concern, regretting the incident and assuring that they would collaborate with the authorities in the investigation of the case.
