The trial of a father accused of killing his daughter and having sexually abused her has begun. Ronald Lee McMullen Jr., 45, says his daughter Kailee McMullen, 22, was accidentally killed after shooting herself in the face while handling a firearm. However, prosecutors accuse the father of being a controlling man who had sexually abused the young explorer.

The young woman was found dead in the home she shared with her father on the morning of June 29, 2017. Kailee had graduated in 2013 from Norman North High School, where she was the co-captain of the cheerleading squad. She allegedly confessed to two friends that her father had sexually abused her in the months leading up to her death, according to an official document obtained by PEOPLE. The same document alleges that the father improperly touched his daughter in 2007, when she was only 14 years old, but no charges were ever brought against him.

According to investigators, the father called 911 at 5:45 a.m., saying that Kailee had accidentally killed herself while playing with a loaded pistol. The man, who has pleaded not guilty, refused to undergo a lie detector.

At about 5:38 am the man called his wife, Kailee's mother, who was working as a nurse in a hospital and was out of the house that night. Police claim that upon arrival at the home they found the mother trying to revive her daughter, who was already dead, giving her mouth-to-mouth breathing. The young woman's father was covered in blood and trying to wipe it off his body, according to an official document. She also allegedly fell to the ground and smeared her bloody hands and face with dirt. The father assures that he tried to take the pistol from his daughter but shot himself before he could avoid it.
