The mother of Patrick Crusius, the alleged perpetrator of the El Paso shooting, says she alerted police to her son before the tragedy. The young man - who is reported to be a white supremacist - is accused of opening fire at a Walmart store, killing 22 people and injuring more than 20.

Lawyers for Crusius' family revealed to CNN that the young man's mother had alerted the Allen, Texas Police Department because she was concerned that her son had an AK rifle in his possession. Lawyers Chris Ayres and R. Jack Ayres said the mother was afraid that her son had a firearm considering his lack of maturity and lack of experience with weapons.

During the call, a public safety officer informed the mother that her 21-year-old son could legally purchase that rifle. The mother did not at the time give her son's name to the authorities and the police did not ask for more information on the case.

In a statement, the police revealed that Crusius did not have a criminal history and did not believe that the mother was presenting him as a threat to others. "This was not a volatile, explosive or erratic boy," said attorney Chris Ayres. "Not that the alarms were going off." A family member describes him as a typical young man who was confused about which path to take in life and was considering transferring to a university, looking for a full-time job, and enlisting in the US military. "He was trying to decide what his next step would be," the source said.
