A two-year-old boy who was reported missing Tuesday afternoon in Texas was found dead Wednesday morning inside a vehicle outside the family's apartment.
The mother, who she said had put him to nap around 2 p.m. Tuesday, sparked a frantic search to find out that her little one was not home, according to PEOPLE.
More than 200 volunteers, led by law enforcement officers and child safety agencies, searched several blocks around the family residence, without success. Hours later, the boy's body appeared inside the vehicle of one of the family's neighbors, when he got into his car shortly after 6 a.m. on Wednesday, according to police.
Although police reported searching near the apartment where the boy lived, agency chief Frank Dixon said the car had tinted windows that kept it from being seen inside. However, he could not confirm if that specific car was registered.
"Can we conclude that someone checked every handle on every car? Obviously not,”she said. "We don't know if the car was open."
The officer assured that the boy's body showed no evidence of abuse.
He added that the family is devastated and that the boy's mother is under medical observation.
"She suffered a panic attack when she was notified [of the finding]," said Nixon.
So far, there are no arrests or suspects and authorities are investigating to determine what happened to the boy and how he ended up inside the vehicle.
"This is not the time to accuse, it is not the time to blame," said the officer. "It is a time to collectively unite and cry together and heal together."
