The case of the attempt against the life of former baseball player David Ortiz has taken a new turn. This Wednesday, Jean Alain Rodríguez Sánchez, Attorney General of the Dominican Republic, affirmed that the former Boston Red Sox player was not the target of the attack against him on June 9.

At a press conference, the prosecutor assured that the situation is much more complex: Ortiz for a man associated with the Gulf Cartel, which operates in Mexico. Apparently the alleged drug trafficker - who has been identified as Víctor Hugo Gómez - suspected that his cousin betrayed him to send him to prison and that is why he ordered him to be killed, as reported by The New York Times.

Gomez is originally from the Dominican Republic and is wanted by the authorities in the United States. It is currently believed to be on American soil.

According to the authorities, it was he who gave the order to attack his cousin, Sixto David Fernández. By chance, David Ortiz was sitting next to Fernández that night. They were both wearing a black shirt with gold trim and they were supposedly confused.

At the time of the attack, Ortiz and Gómez were sitting at the same table in Santo Domingo's Dial bar, when one of the alleged perpetrators entered the premises to shoot Ortiz in the back.

The director of the Dominican National Police, Ney Aldrin Bautista Almonte, at the press conference in Santo Domingo speaking of the attack against David Ortiz:

At the Bautista press conference, he showed videos and photos that attempted to recreate the way the attack unfolded. According to what was explained, hours before the attack, a man named Alberto Rodríguez Mota - who is still a fugitive from the law - arrived at the bar and settled there waiting for the victim. Around 8:00 pm, when the alleged target of the attack arrived at the Bar, Mota took a photo of him, which was partially covered by a parishioner. He then sent her to her cronies describing how the white was dressed.

At a nearby gas station, Rolfi Ferreira Cruz, the alleged perpetrator of the shot, and Eddy Feliz García, the subject who took him to the bar, boarded a motorcycle in the direction of the site to carry out the attack.

According to the authorities, Victor Hugo Gómez does not have a criminal record and owns a car garage. In 2011, when Fernández was arrested on drug trafficking charges, he thought that his cousin had denounced him and vowed to take revenge.

Multiple sources have confirmed the version that the suspects were hired on the promise of receiving 400,000 Dominican pesos as compensation, that is, about $ 7,800 per head. According to what has been said, the drug trafficker who ordered the attack coordinated everything through two former inmates he met in prison: Gabriel Alexander Pérez Vizcaíno and the aforementioned Alberto Rodríguez Mota.

11 individuals have been arrested for the attack against David Ortiz, the mastermind and the coordinator of the operation are still at large.
