The desperate cry of several Central American children separated from their parents by Immigration authorities at the Texas border last week is going around the world in an audio recording obtained by ProPublica.
"Mommy" and "Daddy" are just some of the heartbreaking pleas heard from the more than 10 children in the detention center in the custody of immigration officials. However, a booming voice is that of a Border Patrol agent heard over the cry making a joke.
"Well, we have an orchestra here," he exclaims loudly, heard between the weeping of the little ones. "What is missing is a director."
According to various media reports, one of the girls heard on the recording is a little Salvadoran, Alison Jimena Valencia Madrid, 6 years old. "My mom says that I will go with my aunt and that she will come and get me as soon as possible," groans the girl, who repeatedly begs for a call.
More than 2,300 immigrant children have been separated from their parents since April, when the Trump administration launched its Zero Tolerance immigration policy, which calls for the prosecution of all persons who attempt to enter the United States illegally with their children. More of those children are under the age of 4.
Another video leaked from the detention center shows the inhumane conditions in which immigrants are kept on the premises in McAllen, Texas. Initially, the children are in tents, and large tents that have been converted into Border Patrol detention centers.
The Border Patrol agent's joke has caused outrage on social media with millions of comments calling the act "insensitive" and "inhuman."
