Corinna Tovar's mother was with the 1-year-old baby in a parking lot in San Antonio, Texas, storing her grocery shopping in her car when a van that was traveling at high speed caused her daughter to “fly out” of the shopping cart where she was sitting, police reported.
Police allege that the girl died because a drunk driver was speeding in the parking lot and hit the shopping cart where the baby was sitting. The driver of the blue Ford Ranger van drove erratically through the parking lot of the Dollar General store in San Antonio, Romana López, a police spokeswoman, told PEOPLE. The tragedy has shocked the community and left Corinna's relatives heartbroken.
The girl's mother and another woman were also injured after the shopping cart where the baby was sitting was rammed, the driver collided with another vehicle parked near Corinna's mom's car.
Authorities arrested the driver, identified as David Fuentes, 25, on charges of poisoning manslaughter and poisoning assault. The young Hispanic man is jailed on $ 50,000 bail on the first charge and another $ 25,000 bail on the second charge, according to police.
The two women - whose names have not been released - suffered serious injuries and were treated in the same hospital where the baby was pronounced dead after the fatal fall. The incident was captured by the store's security cameras and the charges against Fuentes could escalate depending on the medical condition of her adult victims, who are still under treatment, Sergeant Ralph Salazar told KSAT. It is not yet known if Fuentes already has a lawyer for his defense.
