The woman accused of running over two children, including the daughter of Broadway star Ruthie Ann Miles, was found dead after an apparent suicide. A friend of Dorothy Bruns, 44, became concerned that she did not hear from her and alerted the police. When officers arrived at Bruns' home, she was found unconscious in her room with no signs of being beaten. The woman was pronounced dead by the emergency team. A NYPD spokesperson told PEOPLE that Bruns died at her Staten Island residence of an apparent suicide.

Another police officer said he died of an overdose and a note was found expressing his wish to "no longer live." In March, Bruns was accused of running over and killing two children on a street in Brooklyn: Abigail Blumenstein, 4, the actress's daughter, and Joshua Lew, a 1-year-old baby. Miles, who was seven months pregnant, and Lew's mother - Lauren, a friend of the actress - were also injured.

The actress - who starred alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in the Sunday in the Park With George musical and other well-known Broadway plays - recovered from the accident but lost the baby she was expecting.

Bruns' white Volvo ran over the victims after driving a red light. Bruns alleged that he had had an epileptic seizure during the accident. The mothers and their children were leaving a church event when they were run over. Bruns was under house arrest awaiting trial.
