A father in Texas could spend the rest of his days in prison after the death of his 3-week-old son. The incident happened four years ago and the man just received his sentence, PEOPLE confirmed. Michael Alan Webster, 40, pleaded not guilty to the death of his baby Michael Webster Junior in August 2014. However, he was convicted in October and sentenced to life in prison. According to the prosecution, the man stole the boy from the mother on July 31, 2014 after his partner abandoned him fleeing his abuse.

Eight days after taking the baby, he refused to return it to the mother despite being pressured by the police and by his relatives. According to the prosecution, Webster lied, saying that the boy was injured so that the mother would meet him again.

The baby died on August 8 of "complications from sleeping in an unsafe place," Montgomery County District Attorney's Assistant Joel Daniels told PEOPLE. Webster and the baby had been sleeping for several days in a U-Haul truck outside the home of a relative who allegedly did not know that Webster had the newborn with him.

After Michael Jr. died, the father asked this relative to call 911. Daniels adds that the baby possibly died from being exposed to heat - since the U-Haul's air conditioner stopped working when it ran out of gas. - or by suffocation since the baby was "completely covered by a blanket" when they found him dead.

They also found traces of methamphetamine in the baby's body. It is unknown how the boy ingested the drug but they suspect she inhaled it when her father smoked it in the vehicle. Webster had a criminal record that included domestic violence against the boy's mother, sexual assault offenses, and drug possession. She was on probation when the child was taken.

The father's attorney, Rick Brass, alleges that the boy died of "a neurological abnormality that caused his death." Brass says that the night the baby died he was sleeping in the truck with his father with the air conditioning still working. "While he was sleeping, the baby apparently died," Brass said of the father.
