The (almost) misfortune of a couple who lost their engagement ring after the garment rolled on a sidewalk and got into a sewer became a humanitarian act that caused a stir on Twitter.

It was the husband of Erin Brown, a Philadelphia woman, who lost her ring when it slipped from her hand and fell silent as she walked through 12th and Market streets on Friday night. "It was her grandfather's wedding ring that was engraved with her grandparents' initials and marriage date," Brown said on Twitter.

"The ring fell into a sewer full of cigarette butts, needles, condom packaging, bills, credit cards, and several bundles of keys," he wrote through his account.

The couple searched until exhaustion on Friday night and returned the next day determined to find the valuable garment. To aid themselves in the feat they were about to undertake, the Browns created a tool made of clothespins, drawing the attention of several passers-by who unsuccessfully wanted to help.

After spending hours trying to reach the ring in the rain, two members of the local police approached the rescue. All it took was a call for "a prince with his shining sword" to come, as Brown called on a PECO company worker on Twitter, who teamed up to open the manhole and brought the tools to open the manhole until they found the gold ring.

The couple is grateful not only for retrieving the ring, but for the generosity of the police and the workers who helped them. "It really showed everyone's humanity in the amount of support we received," Erin wrote. Those people and the police officers did not have to stop and help. We loved that they were willing to support us.”
