A police officer was accused of sexually abusing young women whom he detained while patrolling the streets of Los Angeles. Israel Sánchez was accused of arresting several women and forcing them to take off their clothes, groping two of them. Although the former officer denied the allegations, he was found guilty in June during his trial and will go to prison for almost eight years. Sánchez will also be registered as a sex offender.

The Monterey Park police officer in Los Angeles detained women between the ages of 19 and 28, sexually assaulted them while he was wearing his uniform, and turned off the cameras of his patrol to leave no evidence, according to reports.

The 42-year-old man denied having misconducted and said one of the women had voluntarily undressed. His lawyer asked for a medical evaluation, alleging that Sánchez was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for having served in the war as a US Marine in Fallujah in 2005 and 2007. According to his lawyer, this mental condition caused him to develop a risky behavior”.

"My heart has always been in the right place," said Sánchez. His lawyer said that the women had denounced him to take revenge on the police after arresting them. However, the prosecution noted that there were similarities in the victims' accounts, although they did not know each other.

Officers began investigating Sánchez when a 19-year-old girl, the youngest of the women who accused him, reported him. The young woman expressed in a letter that the incident had affected her so much that she had thought about committing suicide. "This man took more than my dignity," she said. "I lived in complete darkness."
