An 8-year-old girl and her brother were about to be taken to Mexico after being kidnapped by a stranger, if not for the courage and sagacity of the girl who once called 911 and managed to save them.

According to reports from the San Diego police department, the events happened this Monday around noon in the town of Encanto, near San Diego, when Malayha Cole had gone to the store with her mother and her little brother. The mom left the car running and left the children in the parking lot to enter the warehouse. At that moment, a stranger got into the car and started, taking the minors.

And although Rodney Cole, the girl's mother, was aware of what was happening and tried to chase the car on foot, she could not reach it.

But the thief did not have the cunning of the minor who had the phone that her mother had left in her possession. "If you don't take us back to our daddy, I'm going to call the police," the girl threatened in an interview with the KNSD station in San Diego. The girl then said that the woman was furious and told her not to call anyone. "If you don't give me that phone I will drive in circles and crash this car," said the woman, who goes by the name of Leslie Esparanza Saenz and is 26 years old.

But the little girl was not intimidated and called the police asking for help and telling the operator that she and her three-year-old brother had been kidnapped. For further information, Malayha indicated that they were on a highway and that on the way there were signs saying that they were heading to Mexico.

The San Diego police immediately mobilized and after an hour of hunting the woman was detained while trying to pass the San Ysidro border crossing.

Now four charges are being carried against her, including car hijacking, kidnapping to commit a robbery, car theft and death threats, sources confirmed to People. The woman remains in the custody of the authorities.

"I simply thank God, I am very grateful to the San Diego police and each of the justice agencies that worked together to find my children in an hour," exclaimed the mother of the children. "Each of the five minutes that passed seemed like a full day."
