A New York man could be sentenced to life in prison later this month after pleading guilty to first-degree murder in the death of his former teacher and youngest son.

People magazine confirmed that Isaac Durán Infante, 23, admitted in court that he strangled his ex-girlfriend with an electric cable on December 22, 2016.

A prosecuting source told PEOPLE that Infante killed former DeWitt Clinton High School science teacher Felicia Barahona inside her apartment while her 4-year-old son Miguel watched.

After killing the 36-year-old mother, who was a veteran of the Afghanistan War, Infante grabbed a different rope and used it to kill the boy.

Once the boy died, the source confirms that Infante left him face down in a bathtub full of water.

The source says that Infante initially denied having any involvement in the deaths.

Prosecutors said he tried to cover up his crimes by trying to make it appear that Barahona killed Miguel before committing suicide. Infante later grieved for his son while being questioned by detectives.

He told police that he had not been in the Barahona apartment building since 2012, when his little one was born.

Barahona's relationship with Duran was first made public in March 2013, after several local news outlets obtained an internal investigative report.

According to those reports, Barahona began having sex with Durán after turning 18, although they later separated in early 2012 before Miguel was born. Barahona was fired from Dewitt Clinton High School in August 2012.

Infante is likely to be sentenced to 25 years in prison or life in prison when he returns to court on December 19.
