Stephen Bodine will spend the rest of his days in prison for torturing and killing his 3-year-old stepson. The Kansas man then tried to hide the boy's remains in cement. Bodine was sentenced Monday to 109 years and six months in prison by a Sedgwick County judge for the 2017 murder of little Evan Brewer.

"His actions were gross, cowardly, and monstrous," Judge Steve Ternes told Bodine during his sentence, according to the Wichita Eagle newspaper. The boy's mother, Miranda Miller, 37, who was the killer's girlfriend, testified and settled with prosecutors. The woman pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, aggravated assault, child abuse and endangering a minor.

During the trial it was revealed that the boy's stepfather and mother had kept him away from the rest of the family, including his biological father Carlo Brewer, for several weeks before his death. The boy's father's relatives showed their pain at the tragedy in court.

Evan was killed on May 19, 2017, reportedly after Bodine made him stand for hours against a wall for not eating. When Evan collapsed, the man carried the crying boy to the bathroom and when he came out, he had the boy's corpse in his arms, Topeka Capital-Journal reported. Miller testified that days later his partner told him they had to "take care of Evan because he was starting to smell bad."

It was then that they bought cement and hid the boy's remains in a cement column in the laundry room at his home, an affidavit obtained by PEOPLE dictates. The couple moved out of the house, and four months later, the owner of the house called the police after feeling a strange smell and the police found the remains of the missing boy. During their investigation, authorities found countless photos and videos of the boy being tortured, the affidavit concludes. The chilling crime has shaken the world.
