A visit to Walmart to buy fruit that ended in tragedy has made a resident of Alabama virtually a millionaire two years later.

A jury awarded Henry Walker in a Russell County court an award dedicated to news from the southern state.

According to the lawsuit, Walker's foot became entangled with the wooden pallet the fruits were on at a chain store in Phenix City, causing him to lose his balance and fall, with the result that he broke the hip.

The plaintiff, who was then 59 years old, maintained that as a result of the accident he now has trouble walking.

"When you walk to the supermarket without any difficulties, the last thing you expect is to be on a stretcher," attorney Shaun O'Hara, who represented Walker and said Walmart should have covered the pallet for safety, told AL.com.

The lawyer pointed out that in the trial they showed images of security videos in which they see how other clients also fit their feet between the tables of the pallet when they try to access the box with the melons.

Throughout the process, the Arkansas-based chain maintained that the arrangement in which the melons were displayed posed no danger.

After its deliberation, the jury concluded that the plaintiff deserved to be compensated and awarded him compensation for damages and other multinational years.

"We are disappointed by this verdict," Walmart spokesman Randy Hargrove, who told the New York Daily News newspaper, called the compensation awarded to the plaintiff "excessive" and said they will appeal the jury's decision.
