Arkansas authorities arrested parents of a 15-day-old baby in which doctors detected at least 100 rat bites, endangering the well-being of a minor.
According to People, police were called to a Magnolia city hospital after a boy weighing just 5 pounds underwent reconstructive surgery for the "serious" bites on his arms, hands and face.
The wounds were so impressive that one on the forehead had exposed his skull.
Her parents - Charles Elliot, 18, and Erica Shryock, 19 - told authorities that both woke up last Sunday morning to the cries of the newborn, whose sex has not been revealed.
When they went to see him, they saw the blood in his crib and took him to the hospital center, they alleged.
Despite their explanations, both parents remain behind bars waiting for an unspecified bond to be paid.
On their inspection, investigators in this case discovered that there were rat tracks and droppings in the home, and concluded that the rodents must have been attacking the child for several hours.
