New York was the scene on Tuesday of a horrific mass outrage that left 8 dead and 12 wounded, which has been described by the authorities as "a terrorist act", the worst in the city since 9/11

At a press conference, New York police officials reported that at 3:05 a man driving a rental truck from the Home Depot chain climbed into a bicycle lane that runs parallel to the West Side Highway in the area. west of lower Manhattan, near the intersection with Houston Street.

"There are 8 people dead and there are at least 12 injuries," confirmed New York Mayor Bill DiBlasio. "Based on the information we currently have, this was a terrorist act … directed at people who were carrying out their daily activities with no idea what was coming."

The vehicle entered the bike lane at Houston Street, heading south, and ran over the adults and minors who were found in its path, until it collided near the intersection with Chambers Street with a school bus.

Videos that began to circulate in different media showed images of a slim man dressed in pants and a jacket leaving the accident truck with objects in his hands, trying to escape on foot through the vehicles.

Police sources told The New York Times that the man repeatedly yelled "Allah is great."

Finally, the police managed to arrest him after making several shots, some of which hit him and for which he was transferred to a hospital.

Various media identified the suspect as Sayfullo Saipov, 29, of Tampa, Florida. After his arrest, the police recovered two pistols, one of them was a shotgun and the other was similar to the one used in paint ball games, according to various reports.

"Today innocent lives have been lost in lower Manhattan … this is a tragedy of enormous magnitude," said James O'Neill, police commissioner.

All victims are male. Six of them died at the scene of the attack and two after being transferred to the hospital in a state of extreme gravity, according to the New York Fire Department.

"At this time, there is no evidence to point to [more attacks]," added New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. "The truth is that New York is an international symbol of freedom and democracy … that makes us a target for those who oppose it."

Despite the attack, much like the one that has occurred in many cities around the world in recent years, authorities have indicated that the massive New York Halloween parade will take place.
