On Tuesday, the Panamanian police arrested a Panamanian teenager as the main suspect in having killed the young American woman who in February of this year appeared strangled in her own swimsuit on Bastimentos Island, part of the Bocas del Toro archipelago.

Publimetro reported that the superior prosecutor of that jurisdiction, Erneldo Márquez, directed this operation to find the person responsible for murdering Catherine Johannet, a 23-year-old girl who had completed her studies in literature at Columbia University in 2015.

The operation led by Márquez involved 30 agents from the National Border Service, the National Police and other investigative officers, which led to the arrest of a 17-year-old minor. To get there, the researchers carried out more than 200 blood tests, to analyze the DNA.

When Johannet's body was found, on a tree-lined path near a Bastimentos beach, it was reported that the young woman had had her bathing suit ripped off and then strangled with him.

Before her murder, the victim had visited six continents and had made a recent 18-month trip to Vietnam, where she taught English literature to local students.
