At least 86 children died over a 10-year period while in the custody of a private firm of private shelters, according to an investigation by the Senate Finance Committee reported by Buzz Feed News.
Buzz Feed News explains that in only 13 of those deaths did the company The Mentor Network, which had those children in its custody, conduct an investigation. Likewise, the note states that the Senate committee says that said company "falsely" claimed that its death rate was in line with the overall fatality rate in the foster care system.
The Buzz Feed News note details that the Senate began the investigation by a series of reports that the portal had made about the events that occurred in said company. One of the cases they present is that of a two-year-old girl, who after being located in a house run by the Mentor company, was killed by the woman who cared for her at the residence or her foster mother. In another case, a series of children were sexually abused by the company's foster parent. Buzz Feed indicates that in that house, the man was paid to be a foster parent despite the signs. Inclusively, the note indicates that the name requested that the children be “male, white and of a certain age”.
Following an investigation by Buzz Feed News, the Senate introduced the Child Welfare and Accountability Act to review contract shelters.
