Heartbreaking images emerged Thursday during the rescue of dozens of people who were shipwrecked this morning in Brazil. The accident occurred off the coast of the city of Salvador, capital of the state of Bahia, when the boat capsized, leaving at least 18 people dead and many more missing.

The Globo newspaper published photos where rescuers are seen carrying a one-year-old boy who was found among the victims. The boy was unconscious at the time of the rescue but died in an ambulance on the way to the hospital. In total, the ship had 129 people on board.

According to Flavio Almeida, lieutenant colonel in the Brazilian navy, the ship sank when it was moored in Todos los Santos Bay. "There were a lot of people," added Edvaldo Santos de Almeida, one of the survivors to G1 News, who explained that it was raining and that a huge wave caused the boat to capsize. “The rescue took a long time. We were in the water for at least two hours."

The Navy rescued 21 people with the help of individuals who approached in private boats. According to the Associated Press, the ship was loaded with people on their way to school and work - many of them passengers who use this type of ferry daily as their means of transportation.

“Some passengers were able to swim to shore. Others were collected [at sea]”, explained Almeida. "An investigation is going to be conducted to determine what happened, but right now we are in the midst of a rescue operation."

According to the Bahia health department, authorities sought help from 34 people for various injuries. The incident occurs just two days after another passenger ship sank in the Xingu river in Pará state. This accident left a balance of 21 dead. They are still missing.
