Susanna DeForest, a 20-year-old college student, died unexpectedly while hiking in the Colorado mountains last week.
The mother of the unfortunate young woman, Kate DeForest, confirmed the death of her daughter on Facebook and detailed that she suffered from a disease related to heights. "The friends who were with her did their best to get help on time," she said.
The Pennsylvania College of Art & Design student was with three friends last Thursday near sources known as Conundrum Hot Springs when she became ill, the Pennsylvania Times Herald reported.
The youths were provided with the necessary equipment to spend the night in the springs, at a height of 11,222 feet, when Susanna began to vomit when installing the tent. Her friends immediately ran for help, and they were unable to contact the emergency services until almost two hours later.
DeForest passed away while awaiting the arrival of a helicopter with paramedics.
Prosecutor Eric Hansen told the Times Herald that the official cause of death will not be known until an autopsy is performed.
His family will hold a memorial service on Sunday in Audubon, Pennsylvania.
