Elderly Kidnapped For A Cup Of Salt

A real nightmare is the one an elderly couple lived in Tamarac, Florida, when their neighbor's son kept them kidnapped for hours in their own home after asking them for "a cup of salt" to cook.

The events occurred at the home of Irene Rosen, 70, and her husband, Louis Rosen, 99. According to the couple, on Friday around 4:30 pm the son of their neighbor, Leonardo Benítez, 45, He approached his house and asked for the mentioned condiment for cooking.

The couple, who was resting on the back porch of the house, assures that the man was acting erratically and that when they were going to give him the salt, he took out a knife to threaten them, demanding a hostage situation, "the woman told WPLG.. "I am not a person with weapons, I have never been around them … and sit there and someone point a gun at you …" the woman added between sobs, visibly shaken by the assault.

The elderly were held at the residence for hours, since the subject wanted to obtain their bank details to withdraw money from their accounts. However, the couple took advantage of a carelessness of their captor to flee and ask for help, even despite the low mobility they both have.

The woman assured that she was able to get to the end of her block, but that her husband was left behind and was hit by Benítez on the head with the handle of a pistol, causing multiple injuries that had to be treated at a local medical center.

Finally, members of the Special Police Intervention Corps (SWAT) surrounded the elderly people's home and although they did not find Benítez inside, they managed to track him down to a neighboring property where he was arrested.

The alleged assailant is now charged with trespassing, kidnapping, and assault.
