María Lorena Ramírez, who won an ultramarathon running in huaraches, now faces her first international challenge.
The 22-year-old Mexican has made an impact with her sportswear. And it is that she runs with a colorful ruffled dress and a pair of huaraches, typical sandals of her Raramuri culture. The girl, originally from the Rejogochi town in northern Mexico, will travel outside the country for the first time in a few days to compete in Tenerife, Spain. Ramírez will run the 97-kilometer ultratrail, becoming the first raramuri to participate in a sporting event in Europe.
According to Verne of the Spanish newspaper El País, tennis or sports shoes seem heavy and slippery. Sometimes he uses them to train but he always competes with his huaraches. His entertainment consists of walking about 15 kilometers a day with his brother Mario Ramírez, 26, on the rocky mountain near his home. Mario will also compete in the 97 kilometers in Spain.
The young woman has not attended school and speaks little Spanish. Her brother Mario speaks better Spanish and sometimes serves as her interpreter. Their language is Raramuri and only spoken by their small community in Chihuahua. Only 75 families live in her town. "When I'm here doing nothing, it makes me very sad," said the athlete, who keeps busy sewing dresses.
When he is not competing in races, he takes care of livestock. Every day he walks between 10 and 15 kilometers with his cows and goats. She is currently considered one of the fastest long-distance runners in the Raramuri community.
