A pair of sandals and her traditional long dress was all it took for an indigenous Rarámuri -or Tarahumara- runner from northern Mexico to finish victorious in third place in the annual 102-kilometer marathon on the Spanish island of Tenerife.

Lorena Ramírez, 23, competed in the 18-39 age group and finished her course in an astonishing range of 20 hours, 11 minutes, and 37 seconds.

This is the second race of its kind in Europe, with a portion of the course reaching 3,500 meters, and this year it attracted 2,400 runners from 38 countries.

Ramírez was accompanied by other Rarámuri runners, her brother Mario and sister Juana, who grew up running in the Sierra Tarahumara mountains in Chihuahua. These three brothers could be among the famous runners in northern Mexico.

This is not the first victory for Lorena, who had already made a name for herself as the first Rarámuri woman to compete in Tenerife when she participated last year. She was invited to attend after she won the women's 50-kilometer Ultra Trail Cerro Rojo category last year in Puebla.

In that race, as in the recent Tenerife Bluetrail, he wore traditional outfits, including basic sandals made from recycled tires.

A Puebla website noted: He was running "without a hydration vest, without sneakers, without lycra and compression socks, without any of those gadgets used by runners today."

The official Facebook page of the Tenerife Bluetrail congratulated Ramírez for his good work and incredible tenacity.

"Bravo, Lorena Ramírez, with your third place in the senior category, you removed your thorn, as well as your brother Mario Ramirez with your 22nd place overall and your sister Juana who ran the trail and reached 15th place in the female category"

!! Congratulations!!
