Mother Drowns Trying To Save Her Daughter

Hopes of finding a 4-year-old girl alive who fell into the freezing waters of a river in Utah on Monday are dashed as the child's family mourns the death of their mother who died in the effort to rescue her.

According to the KUTV station, Brenda Nalleli DeDios, 34, was sitting on a stone bridge with her daughter, London DeDios, when the little girl fell into the Provo River near the Bridal Veil Falls.

The Utah County Sheriff explained in a statement that five people immediately jumped to the rescue, in addition to the mother.

Tragically, mom and young Sean Zcahery Thayne, 30, one of the good Samaritans, were swept away by the current and managed to be pulled out of the water 3 miles from the scene, but in critical condition. Both died at a local hospital where they were rushed to the emergency room.

The minor's rescue operations were suspended overnight and resumed this morning, although authorities gave little hope of finding the girl.

"Just looking at the river terrifies me thinking about being inside it," Sheriff's Office Sgt. Spencer Cannon told The Salt Lake Tribune newspaper about the rescue operations. "Parents should be so cautious … in these kinds of situations," Cannon emphasized about the incident. "Hold on to your children for what they want most."

The incident occurred in the vicinity of Timpanogos Park, which is now closed to investigations.
