The controversial story of a 14-year-old girl who killed her father with a bullet to the head has come to an end.

In a settlement reached through attorneys, Bresha Meadows of Ohio pleaded guilty Monday to involuntary murder to a sentence of one year and one day in prison at a juvenile detention center.

The teenager will also have to spend six months in a psychiatric institution to receive treatment for the aftermath caused by the incident, after which she will be released on parole for two years.

The case of Meadows and her family shook public opinion when the young girl, who is now 15 years old, killed her father in July 2016, after suffering years of abuse.

Bresha has already been behind bars for nine months, but according to what her lawyer told People, she will only serve 2 more months in detention to be transferred to a mental institution.

The judge in charge of the case also ruled that when the girl reaches 21 years of age, the record for the murder of her father, Jonathan Meadows, 41, will be erased from her record.

"[Bresha] will have a new start in life [after spending] her entire life observing and being a victim of abuse," the defendant's attorney, Ian Friedman, told People. "We are very pleased that she will receive a second chance, as we all deserve."

"She also feels relieved, she really is," said the lawyer regarding the sentence. "It is the first time I have seen her smile, but really smile, and feel a little optimistic."
