Co-pilot on an American Airlines flight, William Mike Grubbs, died Wednesday moments after the plane he was manning at Albuquerque, New Mexico airport landed.
According to CNN, the first officer felt bad during the final phase of the descent of the aircraft, a Boeing 737, so the crew members alerted the emergency services and, once on the ground, tried to revive him by practicing first aid during about 40 minutes, no luck. Grubbs was pronounced dead soon after.
American Airlines flight 1353 had departed from Dallas-Forth Worth airport as normal. Two miles from making landfall in Albuquerque, the captain alerted of a medical emergency on board and practiced the landing maneuver without incident.
Once the plane was ready to disembark, the first officer was assisted by paramedics.
The airline distributed a statement in which it indicated that "we are attending to the needs of the family and colleagues of First Officer Grubbs, and our thoughts and prayers are with them in these difficult times."
As is customary in all types of aircraft related incidents, the FAA (the Federal Aviation Administration) will conduct an investigation to determine and clarify the details of the case.
At no time was there fear for the lives of the passengers, as the captains are prepared to land a plane of the characteristics of the Boeing 737 without the need for help from the co-pilots.
